Differences between Dermal Fillers and BOTOX

If you are considering injectables for your anti aging solution, chances are that you have wondered about the differences between BOTOX and dermal fillers. The biggest difference between the two is that BOTOX is a muscle relaxer and products like Juvaderm and Collagen are fillers.

BOTOX is more for dynamic wrinkles or creases caused by movement, like frowning or squinting. Bototulinum toxin, which is in BOTOX, temporarily impairs the nerve functioning of the muscle, so the relaxed muscle is unable to produce the movement that results in the wrinkle.

Dermal Fillers are best for wrinkles or creases when your face is relaxed, also known as static wrinkles. These static wrinkles form over time as the skin loses its elasticity. Dermal fillers help to reduce these type of wrinkles by adding volume to plump up the tissue, providing a natural, more youthful look. There are also fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra that jump start your bodies natural production of collagen, which delivers longer lasting results.

Both of these two solutions have different products that yield different results, depending on your goals. In addition to BOTOX, there is another product called DYSPORT which works very similar to BOTOX, however DYSPORT can spread a little further and may show results slightly faster.

Similarly, dermal fillers also have several different product options, such as, Juvederm, Restylane, Scuptra and Radiesse. Juvederm or Juvederm Plus is the “next generation” smooth gel filler that has become very popular due to the ease of insertion and minimal discomfort. Juvederm Plus is a little thicker than Juvederm, which works better on deep folds and creases. Restylane is also made of a substance called hyaluronic acid (HA), which is naturally found in our body, but similar to collagen, we also lose HA as our age matures. Restylane allows physicians to subtly “sculpt” your face to restore fullness. Sculptra is a collagen replacing dermal filler that is injected a bit deeper. This is a great option for those who have lost excessive fat in their face, filling out hallowed temples and for shallow wrinkles. Radiesse is similar to Sculptra in that it is also a collagen replacer that also stimulates your bodies natural production of collagen. This calcium-based dermal filler is thicker than most fillers and is especially good at adding volume to deeper wrinkles and folds.

Since everyone’s body is different, it would be wise to consult a physician at your local Medical Spa to get more information on the best solution for your goals.
