Lip Augmentation :: What Are Your Options?

lip augmentation in Knoxville, TN

Every women, at any age, yearns to emit sex appeal. There are certain features that enhance that persona - breasts, butt and eyes, but big lips can give off a sexy vibe as well. Lip augmentation is a cosmetic procedure done to give you fuller, plumper lips. This is a popular procedure that has been increasing in demand since the millennium. Since then, the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS) has reported a 35% increase in the US for lip augmentation procedures. With the advancement of non-surgical treatments, there are several different options to enhance your lips, including collagen, fat transfer and dermal fillers.

Collagen used to be the most common filler used to enhance lips, however the options that are available now are much safer and the effects last longer. Not only that, but before injecting collagen, it is recommended to get an allergy test because the material is extracted from bovine hides. Collagen injections can last anywhere from 4 weeks to 3 months because it is absorbed by the body. In 2013, there were 60,565 collagen procedures done in the US, which is 11% lower than in 2012.

Fat transfer usually involves a fat extraction from your own thighs or abdomen and injected into your lips. There are no risks of allergy with fat injections, however, if you gain weight your lips may enlarge since fat cells will get bigger. It is also possible for fat transfers to provide permanent results. In 2013, there were 66,223 fat injection procedures done, which is 5% higher than the previous year.

Hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers like Restylane or Juvederm are the most commonly used injectables for lip augmentation. HA is a naturally occurring protein that is commonly found in bones. The benefits of using HA fillers are:

  • Practitioners have better control over how much lip volume is added
  • Any lumping or bumps created by moving your lips can be dissolved easily
  • There may be less bruising
  • Minimal risk of allergic reactions because HA is similar to a substance found in the body
  • Last up to six months, sometimes longer

In 2013, there were 1,675,601 HA dermal filler injections done, which is 18% increase from 2012.
